Even when you get the occasional 'bad' American character, it's made very clear that they're an aberration, and they're usually 'solved' by just killing them off. I think that what it came down to for me was that he was starting from basic beliefs that made them seem more parallel world than action fiction set in our world to me- soldiers are always honourable, there's no drug use in the military, no sexual assault, they're all primarily concerned with 'being good' as well as competent, their main goal in life is to protect women and children, etc, and that anything that the 'good guys' do is defensible, because they are good. Is it really that noticeable? Does it matter much to the story? Continuity is a bit screwy with it, but it's supposed to be ok (I skipped it). The exception is Red Rabbit, published in 2002, but set two decades before in the early 80s.

The rest after that are mostly chronological. Start with those, and you won't regret it. So, despite my distaste for the later novels, the first four are excellent, and the next three are decent. The last novel I could bring myself to read was The Teeth of The Tiger (2003) and it was such a disaster that I haven't bothered to read any others. If you manage to finish Debt of Honor, though, and you like it, then you should continue with the series. Without Remorse (1993) was a bit of an uptick, but the quality really fell of the table with Debt of Honor (1994). The novels took a nosedive in quality starting with The Cardinal of the Kremlin (1988), with Clear and Present Danger (1989) showing early signs of Clancy's politics detrimentally infecting his writing, and The Sum of All Fears (1991) being the last moderately decent novel. Though I would also recommend that you only read the first half dozen or so. I would definitely recommend reading them in published order.
